My name is Elizabeth Lee, and I am excited to introduce myself as the new owner and veterinarian at Appomattox Animal Hospital. I am honored to continue the hospital’s legacy and to serve this community with a focus on local, family-oriented, community based care. I grew up in nearby Lynchburg and spent much of my childhood at my family’s property in Amherst. After attending Virginia Tech for both undergraduate education and veterinary school, I returned home. My husband and I chose to settle in Spout Spring, drawn by the charm of an older house with land for our dogs to enjoy. Although my immediate family is from Lynchburg and Amherst, our roots in Appomattox run deep. My great-great-grandfather, Henry Washington Lee, and his family lived in Appomattox for many generations. My great-grandfather later moved to a farm on the James River in Amherst, which is how my branch of the family eventually left Appomattox. When I considered practice ownership, I felt some anxiety. My sister-in-law reminded me of my grandfather’s long history of local business ownership, encouraging me to continue his legacy. As I learned more about his life, I found inspiration especially in his draft card, where he boldly crossed out “none” under Employer’s Name and wrote “self.” There is also a story about my grandfather in a local Madison Heights book. It describes a weary traveler who visited “The Water Tank Café,” which my grandfather ran for many years. When the traveler tried to pay for his hot dog and coffee, my grandfather insisted it was on the house. The book describes him as “tough, but compassionate.” These qualities are essential for running a community-focused veterinary practice, and I hope to honor his example. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends- floating local rivers in the warmer months and upland bird hunting with our pointing dogs in the fall and winter. I also enjoy trail running when I can find the time. My husband and I have a three year-old daughter named Iris who keeps us busy, entertained, and grounded. Professionally, I am passionate about helping people and finding solutions that fit both the needs of their animals and their own expectations. I strive to offer a spectrum of care, collaborating with owners to create the best plan for each situation. I particularly enjoy surgery and am always eager to continue learning and improving. At Appomattox Animal Hospital, you will notice thoughtful updates happening behind the scenes. My goal is to implement efficient, user-friendly systems so your experience feels personal, your needs are heard, and your time is respected. I am committed to preserving what this hospital has meant to so many families while thoughtfully building toward its future.
